Abstract
The study surveys Turkish-Israeli state relations between late 2008 and mid-2013. The author refers to the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in December 2008, the reaction of the Turkish state, the escalation of tension between Turkey and Israel and the deterioration of relations, which had negative impacts on the military and economic cooperation of these two countries. While highlighting certain episodes of Turkish-Israeli state relations following the Gaza attack, the author details the action and reaction of state officials of these two countries. The statements and declarations of state officials led to a rupture in certain aspects of Turkish-Israeli interstate cooperation. The author details the intervention of diverse actors who supported the Turkish stance, while other actors, like US and Jewish American organizations, called for restraint. The author analyses how the issue of Israel recognizing the Armenian Genocide was brought to Turkish state attention. The author notes as well that Jewish-American lobbies hinted that they would stop supporting Turkish state efforts to foil the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the US Congress. The author notes that these two factors played an essential role in causing the further deterioration of Turkish-Israeli relations and concludes that the issue of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide has become a factor used by both the US and Israel as leverage in their foreign relations.
