Abstract
Ghazaros Ghazaros dedicated some forty years of his life to Armenian music in the Egyptian Armenian community. He was the master of the church choir, taught music in Armenian schools and conducted a choir. Ghazarosian was born in Rodosto in 1884, had an initial musical education yet improved his knowledge through self-learning. He was deported in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide, when he lost his parents in Meskene. In mid-1916 he arrives in Aleppo and was offered the position of conductor of the church choir of Surp Karasun Manoug. During 1918 and 1919 he formed a choir, joined efforts with Hagop Uvezian and Parsegh Ganatchian and concurrently taught music in the local Armenian schools of Aleppo. After a short term in Adana, Ghazarosian left for Cairo to conduct the local church choir for the next forty years until 1960. Concurrently he formed a choir, Shnorhali, which further enriched the musical history of the Egyptian Armenian community. Ghazarosian was knowledgeable about Armenian church music and stood out as an authority in the field. He communicated activiely with renowned figures of Armenian culture of the time.
A set of eight letters sent to him by renowned Armenian cultural figures is published here. These shed light on certain aspects of their musical and/or cultural activities and add details about the challenges of promoting Armenian music in the 1920s.
