Abstract
"One of the first and foremost characteristic of Vahagn Davtian's poetical thought is its continuous propulsion towards the reviving of the ancient forms and means of culture," affirms Seyran Grigorian and concludes that "his poems which bear the mighty memories of history both thematically and construction-wise, are not exceptions."
To prove this assertion, Grigorian does minutely examine and analyze certain narrative poems of Davtian, published at various times. Of these mention must be made of the "Dzookh dzekhani" (The Chimney Smoke), the "Tondraketziner" (The Tondrakians), the "Ask siro yev seri" (Poem on love and sword), and the "Zevartnotz" (Zvartnotz) which have been inspired by the ancient Egyptian hymns and Armenian epics, folk songs and folklore, as well as from the Armenian medieval popular songs, Armenian pre-Christian beliefs and chants, mourning songs, traditions and their verbal expressions.
The various comparisons, concordances and concurrence between the poetical, ideological and stylistic expressions of Davtian's works and the others show that Davtian went deep into the search of ancient Armenian and international epic, popular and religious poetry and folklore while working on his modern epic poems mentioned. Yet, concludes Seyran Grigorian, all the analysis and literary criticism of Davtian's epic poetry done here, do not mean that everything is said about the work of the Armenian poet and his poetry, because there remain the characteristics of the dramaticalism and musicality to be yet discussed and analyzed. After all, as Grigorian affirms, these too are based upon the forms, expressions, stylistic patterns and literary characteristics of the Armenian folklore, both ancient and medieval.
