| dc.description.abstract | The classification of Cilician Armenian coins overstruck in Arabic is as follows: 1,2. Levon 1 (1198-1219) silver drams were overstruck by the Seljuq Sultan Kaikhusrew III (1265-1282) in Lu'lu'a, which was an Armenian territory up to 1219. 3. Hetoum-Kaikhusrew's (1242) bilingual silver dram is countermarked Allah. 4. Hetoum II's (1289-1305) copper kartez was overstruck by the Mamlük Sultan al-Ashraf Melik, attributed by Fr. A.. Sekoulian. 5. Hetoum II's, copper kartez was overstruck by a Seljuq ruler. The coin lacks the sultan's name. A comparison with a Seljuq coin catalogue proved that the epigraphy is very similar to the inscription of the coins of the Seljuq Sultan Masüd II (1282-1305). Furthermore, the inscribed Arabic legend on Hetoum's kartez is part of Mas'ud's complete coin die. 6,7. Levon III (1301-1307); Nos. 8, 9. Oshin (1308-1320); and Nos. 10, 11. Levon IV (1320-1342) silver tagvorins were overstruck by the Egyptian Mamlük Sultan al-Näsir Muhammad (1293-1341). 12. Levon IV's silver tagvorin was countermarked on lion's head with a six-pointed star within a circle and a dot within the star. It can be assigned to an anonymous ruler contemporary of al-Näsir Muhammad or al-Ashraf Nasir al-Din Sha'ban II. 13. Levon IV's, silver tagvorin was overstruck in Arabic twice. The second overstrike belongs to the Mamlük Sultan al-Ashraf Näsir al-Din Shaban II (1363-1376). The first overstrike was done by al-Nasir Muhammad. 14. Guy's (1342-1344) silver tagvorin was countermarked with the Arabic inscription al-malik (the king). It can be assigned to an anonymous ruler contemporary of al-Ashraf Nasir al-Din Shaban II. 15,16. Gostandin III's (1344-1363) silver takvorins were overstruck by al-Ashraf Nasir ai-Din Shabän. 17. Gostandin III's, silver tagvorins was countermarked on lion's head with a sixpointed star within a circle and a dot within the star, similar to the above No. 12, Levon IV. 18,19. Levon the Usurper's (1365-1373) silver tagvorins were overstruck by al-Ashraf Nasir al-Din Sha'ban. Table 1 offers reconstructed complete Arabic overstriking inscriptions and their literal translations. Table 2 gives Arabic inscriptions overstruck on Armenian coins. | |
