| dc.description.abstract | After publishing a study on the Cilician fortress of Canamella/Caramella/Caramela (in Latin sources) and al-Tini/ Hisn al-Tinat/Tinat in Arabic sources, the author studies the history of another Cilician Armenian fortress, Kaynuk/ Hisn al- Hadat/al- Hadat al-hamra. Interestingly both these fortresses are not mentioned in Armenian sources, particularly at the time when both were in the territories of Cilician Armenia. The study assesses the strategic location the fortress had for some four centuries and the role it played along with other border fortresses that overlooked the Byzantine-Caliphate boundary. Basing his research on information provided by Arab and non-Armenian historians and sources, the author reconstructs the history of the fortress and the battles fought for its control as well as its eventual transformation from a lively city fortress into a ruined village, although its exact location is still not known. | |
