Abstract
Derenik Demirchyan’s essay "The Armenian" is presented in the following article. Though mainly concentrating on Demirchyan’s estimation of the character of the Armenian, more noteworthy estimations made by other Armenian writers and politicians about our national character during different periods are also reflected upon in the article.
The Armenian with his past and present is in Demirchyan’s sight. During all the hardships in our history over the millennia, the image of the Armenian character has not varied. The field of our survey includes assessments of the national and human character of the Armenian by authors from all periods. They are as follows: the father of Armenian history, Movses Khorenatsi (V century), Derenik Demirchyan, Nshan Peshiktashlyan, William Saroyan (20ᵗʰ century), Aghasi Ayvazyan, Vazgen Sargsyan, and Levon Khechoyan, as well as writers who are alive, such as Varoujan Voskanayn and Vano Siradeghyan. Some works in the frame of our survey can be rightly called oratorical, not literary-fiction. It is the activity and personality of these authors that lets us speak about them not as writers but as politicians engaged in the vital problems of our nation. Such authors are Garegin Nzhdeh, Vazgen Sargsyan, Vano Siradeghyan.
