Abstract
Basing his work on the 1924 study about the novelist Raffi by exiled author Avedis Aharonian, Srabionian reveals the aesthetic value system and literary perceptions of Raffi. The author argues that Aharonian was interested in Raffi not only because he wanted to pay tribute to the 35th anniversary of Raffi’s death, but also because in newly Sovietized Armenia Raffi’s literary heritage was being tarnished. Having witnessed the fate of his own literary heritage, Aharonian tried to defend the most nationalistic/patriotic features of Armenian literature, which were being undermined. Through skillful observations, which only a true literary critic could make, Aharonian reveals the dark and bright sides of Raffi’s work, particularly in his historical novel, Samuel. Srabionian draws attention especially to the observations Aharonian made while interpreting the central conflict of the novel, the act of parent-killing, both as a crime and as a daring act. Srabionian agrees with Aharonian’s claim that he is unaware of any other Armenian author who could have more successfully portrayed such a complicated psychological clash between parents and their son.
