| dc.description.abstract | The author conducts a parallel examination based on certain similarities found in the novelettes "The Web of Earth" by Thomas Woolf and "Ashnan Arev" (summer sun) by Hrant Matevosian. As the likelihood of an influence of Woolf on Matevosian sounds interesting, the article tackles this puzzle. Kalantaryan notes that Matevosian could not read the American novelette in its original text. Furthermore, based on the dates of the Russian and Armenian translations of Woolf's story and the dates of Matevosian's "Ashnan Arev" and "Trees" novelettes, the author concludes that Matevosian could not have been acquainted with Woolf's "The Web of Earth" at the time he was writing his novelettes. Most probably Matevosian was aware of the homologous feature of "The Web of Earth" structure while he was writing his "Trees". However, this is not enough to consider it an influence as "Trees" is seen to be the continuation or the extended version of "Ashnan Arev", which was written much earlier. The article suggests the similarities are the result of the literary preferences of these two authors. Indeed, both authors' writings have significant similarities in autobiographic and documented events and figures. The similarity of the minds and lifestyles of the mothers (Elisa and Aghun) in the said novelettes is noteworthy as well. The article examines these similarities in the archetypal mother figure, based on an analysis of the theory of the psychology of the subconscious conducted by Carl Gustave Yung. According to Yung's theory, the personality of male children is constructed in their mother's womb, through the certain interference of their mother. Thus, one may speculate that retroactively, sons start to perceive their mothers in a similar manner. The article underpins this theory with further evidence. The similarities of the novelettes of Woolf and Matevosian indicate that two authors separated by time and space can be on the same wavelength. | |
