There are some difficulties in comprehending the unity of Western and Eastern Armenian literature. Often these two bodies of literature were opposed. Some critics argued that Western Armenian had developed outside the homeland or had followed the values of European literature. The contemporary Istanbul-resident Western Armenian poet Zareh Khrakhuni counter-argues that the poetry created in post-WWII Istanbul comes not only from classical Western Armenian poetry and especially from Vahan Tekeyan, Daniel Varujan, and Mateos Zarifian, but is also connected to Eastern Armenian literary traditions, especially to Hovhannes Tumanian, Yeghishe Charents, Vahan Terian, and Paruyr Sevak Khrakhuni has been defending this position for over half a century. The author of this article highlights the poetic connections that existed between Toumanian and Khrakhuni. And by doing so she argues that both the two Armenian bodies of literature are located in the same space.
