dc.description.abstract16th century Armenian poetry bore witness to the times. Several poets active in this period, both on and off the Armenian highland, continued and developed the best poetic traditions of the previous centuries. Their works are closer to the popular atmosphere, unhindered by religious and ideological constraints. Grigoris Aghtamartsi, the greatest poet of the century, was born in late 15th century. He was descended from the noble family of the Artsrunis. His grandfather was anointed ‘king’ in 1466, while two of his uncles became Catholicos. He himself was anointed Catholicos of Aghtamar in 1512. This talented poet was a scribe and a miniaturist too. Bakhchinian highlights the thirty or so poetic works of Grigoris, the first of which dates back to 1515. He highlights the optimistic mood of Grigoris’s poetry, including the rose and the nightingale allegory by which Grigoris expresses his worldly feelings and thoughts, the dilemma of serving the demands of both body and soul, the human aspect of the characters Grigoris depicts and the aesthetic means he uses in his endeavor.
