The earliest known Armenian chalice veils date to the 17th century, unlike the Byzantine veils, which date back to 1208. The oldest Armenian veil with a dated inscription comes from 1688 and is preserved in the Treasury House of Etchmiadzin. Others, which were woven later between the 17th and 20th centuries, are preserved and displayed in various museums and private collections of the world. The article is a study of the Armenian inscribed chalice veils embroidered with silk, cotton, gold and silver thread between the 17th and the 20th centuries. The article focuses on the location and shape of the inscription, the colors and kinds of thread used. It describes the content of the inscriptions, which include the names of donors and their kin who had passed away, their surnames and profession, geographic locations, names of churches, monasteries and priests, reasons for the donation, etc. Furthermore, the author analyses the texts' linguistic features, the style and mode of the script, abbreviations used and dates, which provide important ethnographic, geographical and historical details.
