| dc.description.abstract | Generally speaking, very few old Armenian epigraphic inscriptions exist (or are known) in the province of Armavir, Republic of Armenia. The monuments which are found in this province mostly come from the late 18th early 19th century. Nonetheless, 2 km. east of Janfida village a 0.97x0.68x0.35-0.40 meter-sized khachkar with an inscribed date of 924 was discovered sheltered in a newly constructed religious building. The fact that the oldest inscribed khachkar bears the date 879 and that very few are those which bear dates of the early 10th century makes this khachkar one of the rare examples of earliest inscribed khachkras. The khachkar was accidentally revealed during agricultural work in the 1970s and was dated as a 9th-11th-century monument. The author, in this article, decodes the inscription and its date. According to the inscription, in the year 924 a priest named Gorg erected the khachkar in memory of and intercession for pious people. Such a purpose for the erection is typical of the first period of medieval khachkars, because one of the main aims of erecting khachkars then was to intercede and plead for the population. Furthermore, its motifs, style and paleographic features are entirely typical of and in tune with the oldest period (9-11th centuries) of khachkar culture. | |
