| dc.description.abstract | The article highlights the role played by the Catholics Ghukas Karnetsi (1780-1899) from his seat in the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin at a time when Eastern Armenia was under Persian rule and the local khans and emirs fought against each other. The paper argues that the Catholics played a role that went far beyond his religious mission. The recurring fighting between the different local rulers devastated the area, which was mainly populated by Armenians. The latter were forced into misery and were financially ruined. Catholicos Ghukas, as the religious leader of the Armenians, took the initiative to address the socioeconomic needs of his flock. However, his initiatives surpassed these needs as he acquired the role of peacemaker between the belligerent Persian rulers. At certain points the Catholics preempted the attacks, invasions and infighting of neighboring rulers through mediation and offering gifts and presents in order to forestall the ruining of villages and residentiall areas mainly populated by Armenians. | |
