| dc.description.abstract | As of the 1870s positivist philosophy made headway into Western Armenian society. Ottoman Armenian positivists in Istanbul, like Demirdjibashian and Gosdantian, defended science against religion and metaphysics. They believed that society can develop only through the extensive dissemination of science. In 1878 Gosdantian published a book named Metodi vra (On Method) where he criticized Ottoman conservative circles. A few years later in 1883, Demirdjibashian started publishing a journal, Kragan yev Imasdasiragan Sharjoom (Literary and Philosophical Movement). It lasted five years and propagated similar ideas. In an attempt to disseminate European scientific developments among its readers, during 1880-1881 Krikor Mserian published a periodical Meteora, where alongside literary and political articles, he published positivist papers translated from French, Mserian played a prominent role within the Izmir circle of Armenian translators, editors, publishers and intellectuals. He was engaged in different social institutions, which enabled his translations to reach different segments of society and help to further develop the Western Armenian language. Against the backdrop of Western Armenian positivism, the paper highlights the role played by Mserian and his Meteora periodical in further promoting positivist concepts within Western Armenian society. | |
