Abstract
Over the course of his career as a composer, the Lebanese-Armenian Boghos Gelalian (1927--2011) made a remarkable contribution to the preservation of Armenian cultural heritage in the Diaspora as well as to the development of the Lebanese performing school of art and music. In addition, he prepared a significant number of piano performers and an educated circle of music lovers in Lebanese cultural society. Gelalian was a devoted instructor and a skilled pedagogue, who revealed his students' musical abilities and developed their skills by informative and educational methods with painstaking care and unremitting attention. This article studies and reveals the methods of his teaching and his pedagogical approaches through a set of interviews with some of his students who participated in a concert held on May 12, 1996 in Ashrafieh. The author has been able to conduct in-depth interviews with most of the participants in the said concert, including Ani Gadayian, Ani Keropian, Aline Dantzigian, Elda Deguirmenjian and Nayiri Seropian-Seferian. The author has also interviewed a number of other students of Gelalian who have become leading figures in the field of education and music performance, including Aline Tekelian, Lisa Tutunjian, and Serouj Krajian. The basic answers of each interviewee to these seven-question interviews, which reflect their experience with their piano teacher, have been compiled separately. Finally, the author has analyzed their statements and observations and compiled a general set of methods Gelalian used to apply in teaching his piano students.
