The development of periodicals which were an integral part of Armenian history and culture was the product of historical development and the national revival of Armenian public life in the 19th century. Indeed, the 1870s marked the turning point in this regard. In line with national revival, a number of newspapers were published (like Byuzandion, Haykakan Ashkharh, Mshak, Pordz, Ardzagank, Arevelyan Mamul, etc.) that discussed issues of enlightenment, development and growth and the upbringing of the young generation and directed the attention of the communal authorities to the importance of schooling in building the nation among both the Eastern and Western Armenians. These newspapers portrayed the existing public- political life of the period. Against the backdrop of this public life, the author highlights the contribution Western Armenian children’s newspapers had on child rearing. Voskanian brings to the spotlight a number of Western Armenian children’s biweeklies and magazines, like Arevelk Arevelyan Mamul, Avetaber Mankants, Burastan Tsaghik Mankants, Tatchar Mankants, Tatron Barekam Mankants, and Yerkragund. In a comprehensive manner, these papers raised the concerns of Armenian schools. Articles, elaborations and discussion on issues having to do with the curriculum and syllabus, school buildings, and teaching methods were commonplace. Besides, pedagogical tenets and psychological aspects were raised and properly discussed, and they called upon the communal authorities to pay proper attention to such educational concerns. Furthermore, through translations, these children’s magazines promoted reading habits and literary taste, and broadened the perspective and world perception of children. Through various literary and theoretical translations, the young readers shared the experiences of other nations in education, their value systems and world perceptions. The author notes that this enlightening effort was conducted by a large number of renowned Armenian writers, public figures and clerics.
