Having clerics in national armies is not usual. In fact, the US, UK, French, Greek, Czeck, Danish and Norwegian armies have among their rank and file a number of clerics who provide spiritual guidance to all those who wish it. In fact, the presence of clerics in the army has been recognized internationally, and even their rights as POWs are clearly specified, particularly in the Third Geneva Convention. The Armenian national army is not an exception in this regard. Clerical services were introduced in the Armenian army in 1997. Currently there are over 70 clerics who provide Christian guidance to the servicemen. The author outlines the history of the inclusion of clerics in the national army of Armenia, the adoption of legislation which enabled their official presence there, and the socio-spiritual mission they carry out.
