The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between religion and spirituality. Studies have examined religiosity as a predictor of numerous psychological outcomes. However, few studies have investigated the different types of religious orientations as predictors of spiritual transcendence. Scales measuring each of the variables and a demographic questionnaire were compiled and given to 155 college students. Both intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientations were positively correlated with spiritual transcendence. Further analysis showed two additional types of religious orientations, indiscriminately pro-religious and anti-religious. Significant differences were found between all groups. Additionally, there were no differences in religiosity and spiritual transcendence between males and females.
