On the night of March 22-23, 1920, Azerbaijan carried out a large-scale, preplanned offensive against the Armenians of Artsakh and Zangezur. Shushi became the hotspot of these tragic events. The Azerbaijani regular army and a mob armed by the Azerbaijani authorities massacred large numbers of Armenians in Artsakh and its capital, the 35.000-strong Shushi. Thousands of Armenians were tortured, raped, mutilated and killed without distinction as to age or gender. At the end of the butchering between 5000 and 12,000 Shushi Armenians were killed, all Armenian property was looted, destroyed and set on fire. Indeed, life in the Armenian quarter of Shushi came to a tragic end with these massacres. The Diocese of Artsakh also suffered immense losses due to these massacres. A report of 1914 states that the prelacy had 222 functioning churches and 188 priests. Since the 1830s, Shushi had been the spiritual center of the Diocese of Artsakh. All administrative offices, as well as the bulk of the cultural, spiritual and material heritage of Artsakh were concentrated in Shushi. Both Bishop Vahan Ter-Grigorian, the primate of the Diocese of Artsakh, and the majority of the Diocese board members were brutally murdered, and church property was looted or set on fire. Deprived of the church leadership and spiritual center, the Diocese of Artsakh found itself in an extremely vulnerable position. The Azerbaijani authorities embarked on their second step against Artsakh, consistently intensified their repressions, and ultimately, in 1933, closed the Diocese. Up until 1988, the Armenian Apostolic Church was banned in the territory of Artsakh. Nonetheless, thanks to the national liberation struggle, church life was restored in Artsakh and the indigenous Artsakh Armenians resumed their religious activities after a forced stop of over five decades.
