| dc.description.abstract | Some Armenian illustrated manuscripts of the 10th-14th centuries demonstrate an unusual scheme of Transfiguration, where the prophet Moses is depicted in a shroud. Three of these manuscripts (Matenadaran Mss. 10780, 6201 and the Gospel of Tsgruth village near Akhaltsikhe) are famous enough in the scientific environment, while the remaining four (Matenadaran Mss. 4806, 4814, 4818, Brit. Or. 2680) are relatively less well known. The exceptional iconographic approach has not escaped the attention of specialists. Esteemed scientists Tatyana Izmailova and Lilit Zakaryan, in their comprehensive studies of the above-mentioned manuscripts, referred to this unprecedented iconography in a few sentences and have described it in general terms. According to them, the sources of the examined iconography are apocryphal texts. The articles of Rainer Stichel and Nira Stone present more important reviews for the appreciation of this Armenian type of Transfiguration. In these works the authors interpret the problematic aspects in detail, taking the identical scene in Ms. 6201 as a basis for their research. The separate references of famous scientists may have been accepted as sufficient, if these examples of unknown topography had not had followers in the Armenian tradition in later centuries. Furthermore, the same iconography of Moses appears in a miniature painting illustrating "The Second Coming of Christ". The number of available manuscripts makes us assume one artistic direction or identic prototype existed. If the examples of this group have been known in Armenian art since the 10th century, the analogical parallels can be seen in Greek and Russian art only from the 16th century. As a result of present research, we expect to clarify theactual prototype of the examined iconography and the role and ideological parallels of the mentioned examples in the repository of Christian iconography. | |
