| dc.description.abstract | Gumri has a past history of thousands of years. However, its history can be split into two, due to the earthquake of 1988, which ruined a large section of this second city of Soviet Armenia and caused the death of over 35.000 inhabitants. Notwithstanding this catastrophe, the city did not collapse. On the contrary it pulled itself together and, after a short lull, reshaped its cultural life and registered outstanding novelties in arts and culture. The author, a native of Gumri, has been witness to and a participant in the resurgence of cultural since the proclamation of the Republic of Armenia in 1990. Taking a retrospective view, the paper presents a panoramic picture of Gumri and its cultural achievements, ups and downs, changes in the past thirty years and future prospects. The author notes that Gumri has preserved the ethos of its past history. In fact, the city has conserved traditions of the past. Furthermore, having been a bridge from Western to Eastern Armenia and due to its closeness to the famous pre-1920 city of Gars, large numbers of Armenian refugees and survivors of the Armenian Genocide settled in Gumri. These added further cultural colors to the city and gave Gumri a unique cutlural character, which is being developed in its own right. Indeed, the current features of the city are the natural continuation of its past with some added modern taste and twist. These unique traditional features have attracted thousands of tourists from both other places in Armenia and the whole world. The paper focuses on certain cultural forms in the city, including theater, painting, sculpture, music, and crafts, and concludes that the current cultural rhythm of this developing cultural city promises a positive future for the city. | |
