| dc.description.abstract | Author, philologist, editor, educator and caricaturist, Aram Andonian (Constantinople 1875–Paris 1952), after surviving the Genocide and returning from the Syrian desert dedicated his whole life to the historiography of the Genocide and its documentation. He collected hundreds of survivors’ accounts, as well as putting into writing the oral accounts of many others. Thus, his very precious archives are full of genocide accounts and memoirs, most of which have not been published in Armenian yet. Alongside his renowned book Medz Vodjire (The Great Crime) Andonian published articles in newspapers and periodicals. Nonetheless, most of his research works based on memoirs of Aleppo, Bab, Ras Ul Ayn, Meskene, Deyr Zor and the other stations of the Armenians exiled to the desert, remain unpublished. In this article, Mihran Minasian brings to the limelight parts of Andonian’s extensive writings on Deyr Zor. These excerpts depict a clear picture of the remnants of the exiled Armenians that arrived in Deyr Zor, the terrible condition they were in, the destiny of the children and women and the behaviour and activities of the Turkish officials. Specifically, the misdeeds of the head of the Deyr Zor district, Saleh Zeki, and his assistants, Mustafa (the police headman) and the assistant of the general director of the forced deportation of the Armenians, Ismail Hakke Bey, are brought to light. These and many other details are being revealed for the first time and have not been quoted in research papers. | |
