Abstract
Analyzing text is an effective way of exploring an author’s creative thinking and portraying the literary value of a literary work. A textual analysis does not rely merely on the end result of the literary work. Rather, it scrutinizes the whole process of creation, from the beginning to its final stage. In a textual investigation, several constituents are considered, which have to do both with factual and conceptual/content aspects. One detail in such an investigation is nailing down the linguistic and stylistic changes throughout the creation process. In this instance, the researcher relies on both the final as well as all the available versions of the given literary work, including the author’s relevant articles and letters. Rewriting a literary work in a literary-artistic manner sometimes essentially enriches the content and improves its linguistic features.
Misak Medzarents and Taniel Varoujan, and to a lesser extent Rupen Sevag and Indra, are singled out as early 20th-century Western Armenian poets for their extensive effort in improving their poems.
Researching the writer’s efforts at improving his literary works helps to uncover his literary-artistic thinking and clarify the history of a literary work. Such research uncovers new layers of perception and principles and confirms/consolidates specificities and details that characterize him.
In his analysis of the poetry of Medzarents, Avetisian argues that Medzarents made few linguistic modifications to his poems. These changes and corrections mostly improved the artistic content of the sentence and led to the deepening of its pictorial perception. Besides this, it condensed the phrase, abridged it, further clarified and refined it, as well as improved its sound. These changes were the result of both the aesthetic preferences of Medzarents and the literary artistic perceptions of the time.
Avetisian notes that the poems of Medzarents have partly undergone basic changes. It is not necessarily these changes that validated the great literary value of the best poems of Medzarents. Nonetheless, these changes certainly played a role in the improvement of the poetic phrase and are evidence of the peculiar literary-artistic views and mindset of Medzarents.
