Abstract
The name of Taragros (Taragros Ter-Vardanyan, 1878-1935) is little known beyond professional scientific circles. His rich heritage includes his own paintings, miniatures, wood, clay and metal works, and paintings on glass and Chinese rice paper. He made models of khachkars and churches, copied medieval murals, and scientifically described old monuments, and buildings. He uncovered Armenian construction techniques, recipes of Armenian paints and ink, and defined kinds of local clay and their usage.
His scientific heritage, however, remains unpublished and scattered in different archives, including that of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, National Academy of Sciences, Armenia.
Despite his vast knowledge and research, Taragros published very little. The few articles he published, like “Armenian Art Techniques from the Oldest Times to the Present” and “Armenian Applied Arts from the Oldest Times to the Present” have an utterly few Iconic style. These and his conference papers provide diverse information and deep analysis of ethnic and national style in Armenian arts. Nonetheless he put some of his knowledge into practice while doing the murals of the Yalta Armenian Church with painter Vartkes Surenyants, producing the ornaments of the Opera walls in Yerevan and designing several books.
Taragros paid proper attention to both the technical and the religious aspects of various arts. In describing Armenian rug-weaving he detailed, for instance, the timing and condition of picking up the raw material, prescribed the structural manner of preparing patterns for wool threads, and specified the designs.
Taragros participated in several archaeological excavations. Of special value are sketches he made of some 150 churches and Armenian temples scattered all over historical Armenian lands. Some of these sketches are the only eyewitness descriptions of monuments which do not exist any more.
