Abstract
By the mid-20th century immense changes in world theater forced a difficult choice on Iranian-Armenian theater. It had to either update and upgrade itself in order to survive or to disappear.
Fortunately the 1950s witnessed the growth of a number of theater devotees who brought the so-much-needed change to Iranian-Armenian theater.
Content-wise old Armenian plays were staged with new interpretations in tune with contemporary issues. Besides this, new playwrights authored plays which both touched on the social lifestyle of the community and highlighted its national aspirations. In a sense theater aimed at reflecting the real picture of the community, with an important role reserved for women characters. Moreover, the fact that the 60th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was at the doorstep generated a strong feeling and a sense of national awareness which gave a further national twist to Iranian-Armenian theater.
A basic change took place in the profession as well. It is true that the plays were still directed by professional directors, yet professional stage decorators and designers were involved too.
These developments helped the growth of a number of new actors and subsequently served to revitalise the theater.
The author notes that these changes and developments were a reflection of the significant changes that the Diaspora and Armenia had undergone during this same period.
