Abstract
Armenian studies has traditionally considered as diphthongs not only phonetic combinations made up of only vowels as in one syllable type (եա), but also those made up of a vowel and the sonorant յ or ւ. We believe that sonorants can be a constituent of a diphthong only in those languages where they used to have or still have a syllable forming function (i.e vowel) (e.g. in Sanskrit).
In Grabar no sonorant had a syllable forming function because that language could not have syllables without vowels. A syllable had at least a weak vowel ը(e). Therefore, sound combinations of Old Armenian (Grabar) “vowel + sonorant” (“V+S” compare to աւ, եւ,իւ) or “sonorant + vowel” (“S+V”. compare to տ) were not diphthongs but diphthongoids.
When checking the composition of Old Armenian diphthongs it is necessary to clarify the structure of the vowel composition.
Hence, considering thee phonetic value of one-member է and two-member ու, we have arrived at the conclusion that a) the է~ե contrast in Old Armenian had a quantitative nature. Է was a long and ե -a short vowel. B) ու was a diphthongoid. Grabar had 6 vowels (ա, ե, է, ո, ի, ը) and 1 true diphthong (եա) and 7 diphthongoid phonemes (ալ, եւ, իւ, ու, այ, ոյ, տ).
Apart from these monophthong and diphthong phonemes, Grabar also had another 9 triphthong (ուա, ուե, ուի, ուտ, ուէ, եայ, եաւ, իայ, տյ) and quadrophthongoid phonemes (ուայ, ուաւ, ոտյ)
