Abstract
The medieval Armenian personal poem was initiated as a spiritual song. Some of the ancient spiritual songs are hymns (sharakans) dedicated to the holidays of the Armenian Church and to the saints, and in the 5th century they were included in a separate church ritual collection (Sharaknots). Other spiritual songs were intended for everyday liturgy and were included in the Book of Hours. A semi-independent, compact compilation of songs, the Book of Hours was initiated by Sahak Partev and Mesrop Mashtots, after which it was supplemented by the Catholicoi Gut Arahezatsi and Hohan Mandakuni (5th century) and later on by Nerses Shnorhali (12th century).
Diverse bibliographical data confirm the authorship of Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partev of a number of songs in the Sharaknots. However, there is no data on the authors of breviary chants, though a number of these could be identified as authored by Sahak Partev.
According to one source, Sahak Parte created the morning songs. These, we discovered, refer not to hymns that are sung in the morning but to the ancient songs of morning service. In this section of liturgy Sahak Partev inserted in his own translation from the Gospels some parts of the Resurrection of Christ. He composed some of the psalms and songs dedicated to that day which are at the beginning and end of the translation. They follow songs dedicated to a number of church holidays, songs which are a short reproduction of the corresponding parts of the Gospels.
The study examines a number of these songs and identifies them as authored by Sahak Partev.
