Abstract
The Musaler Armenians rebelled against the Turkish orders of deportation, took to arms and defended themselves, relying on the difficult terrain of their mountains. Eventually they were saved by a French naval vessel patrolling the north-eastern Mediterranean coast and taken to Port Said in Egypt. This heroic defense and liberation have become the theme of the renowned novel, The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, by Frantz Werfel.
This presence of the Musaler Armenians at a significant distance from mainland Armenia has always raised questions. This has led to diverse examinations, research and speculation about their origins, which have developed into questions of identity and their ancestry. Based on data from published literature, the author noes that these issues have been circulating and evolving for over a century now. The paper argues that these questions have been given both popular and scientific answers, which, however, do not seem totally reliable. By focusing on the hypothesis that the Musaler population originated in Artsakh, the author tires to examine the basic reason for the development of such a hypothesis and the factors that triggered it. Furthermore, the author examines how such oral history develops and evolves, and how its episodes are maintained and consolidated in popular memory?
