Abstract
Levon Khechoyan is one of the unique literary figures of post-independent Armenia. Nourished by Armenian literary traditions, his work heralds new directions in the development of Armenian prose.
The article tries to depict Khachoyan’s literary profile by focusing on the characters of his literary works. Against the backdrop of Leo Tolstoy’s and Hovhannes Toumanian’s literary works, which reflected their conviction that vice was to lose the contest against virtue, and those of Hrant Matevossian, which confirmed that vice is an unavoidable presence next to virtue, this study highlights the literary perceptions of Khechoyan.
The author argues that Khechoyan’s literary world has no confidence in the future. The world is aggressive and vicious, and man has to preserve the borders of his own identity through suffering and effort. He has no hope of support, because time has deprived him of it.
Khechoyan’s characters have a difficult life. The characters of his first book highlight the centrality of the life crisis, while his second book (a novel) reflects challenges and efforts of living in public space, and his third book is about the destruction and creation of civilizations, where the limits of fatherland are drawn.
His fourth book revolves around the legendary figure from the Sasuntsi David epic, Mher. He symbolizes the philosophical catalyst in the historical evolution of humanity. The author argues that by using the concept of epiphany Khechoyan further deepened his works and inaugurated a new era in Armenian literature. Furthermore, his narration style has put his works into a sort of rebellion against the traditional principles of Armenian literature.
