Abstract
The article comprises a number of Ottoman regulations – kanunnames – shedding light on the economic and taxation systems of various regions in Western Armenia and Cilicia. It brings out through the content of these regulations, the dire economic condition which was the lot of the indigenous of western Armenia during the XVI-XVII centuries.
The Ottoman regulations cited here are all drawn from Omer Lutfi Barkan, XV ve XVII inci asirlarda Osmanli Imperatorlugunda zirai ekonominin hukuki ve mali esas-lari, Birinci cilt, Kanunlar, Istanbul, 1943, translated into Armenian, annotated, and put into circulation for the first time in Armenian historiography, thus being an addition to those Otoman regulations which make the content of Safrastian’s and Zulalian’s book, The Ottoman Regulations in western Armenia, XVI-XVII centuries: Kanunnames, Erivan, 1964.
The regulations given here belong to the Armenian provinces of Ergani, Erzenka, Malatia, Garaman, Chermoug, Gargar, Tivrig, Severeg, Chougour Abat and Roumi.
