Abstract
With the help of certain historical data, colophons of Armenian manuscripts, mural inscriptions and archival givens, it is now possible to clarify the construction process in the late Middle Ages in Armenia, In the XV-XVIII centuries church construction was financed by different sources, such as the Catholicossate, monasteries, and popular contributions. It was at this time that there emerged a new class of patrons, the merchants, who financially helped the erection of new churches and monasteries, renovated the cells and various quarters in both the old churches and monasteries, dug water channels, constructed brigdes, etc. Those who took the initiative, organized and directed the construction work appointed superintendents, who were either chosen from the community members or from the congregation of a given monastery. These were wholly responsible for the progress of the work, the right spending of financial means, and inviting the masons, who in those days moved from one construction site to the other. The masons from Vaspourakan (the region of modern Van) were appreciated most.
Real information and data lack on the existence of architectural schemes, designs and drawings, but the fact that they existed in Russia and the Middle East in the XVI century, and that the Persian emperor ordered in 1664 to write down in registers the measurements of all the Armenian churches at least in his empire, make us believe that there undoubtedly existed architectural planification and designing in Medieval Armenia. Later information tell that the construction plans were first put down and marked on the ground and only then the construction work began. In doing this the Persian gaz, a measurement unit of 1.12 m., was used.
Payment was done in three different ways: a. in lump form (to the architect and master masons), b, according to the amount of the work achieved (to the blacksmiths, carpenters, etc.); and e, in the form of daily wages (to the sundry labourers).
