Abstract
The socio-political conditions of Armenia were a major reason why Armenian culture flourished outside its borders, during the decades of mid-nineteenth century. Cultural awareness started penetrating mainland Armenia as of the sixties of the nineteenth century. Yerevan, Sushi, Van, Garin became the cradles of cultural revival in Armenia. The Holy See of Etchmiadzin played an important role too; besides being a religious center, its position as an administrative and national center was further highlighted and enhanced through a set of innovative projects; communications with the prelacies improved, a philological review, Ararat started in 1868, the Gevorkian seminary was inaugurated in 1874. In her article, the author details the story of Ararat: its editors, contributors, articles, and its role in promoting Armenology among Armenian and foreign scholars. Ararat was discontinued in 1919. Its contributors and scholars constituted the core of the first scientific institute in Eastern Armenia, which was established in 1920. Later on Ararat was replaced by Etchmiadzin, the official monthly of the Holy See. "During the fifty years of its existence, Ararat's achievements are unique. With its research articles devoted to the history of the Armenian Church, literature, philological issues, it was the leading and only serious periodical in the Eastern Armenian scholarly milieu".
