Քանոն ժողովրդական նուագարանը

Abstract
This article is a historical overview of the popular Armenian musical instrument, the Canon. The author briefly reviews the differences between Armenian string instruments and narrates the historical differences and modifications the Canon has undergone throughout the centuries. Furthermore, the author compares the Canon with similar instruments of Middle-Eastern and Far-Eastern origin (Arabic, Iranian, Chinese, etc.) from a musical perspective. He also explores the way they are played, the musicians who play them and the circumstance in which they are played. Moreover, the author highlights the limitations of the instrument with regards to the type of music and compositions played, and its unprecedented development in Armenia during the twentieth century, which brought in a shift from male to female players.
