Արեւմտահայութիւնը եւ Տրիպոլիտանական ու Պալքանեան պատերազմները

Abstract
Right before the outbreak of WWl the Ottoman Empire fought two wars. the Tripolitanian War in 1911 and the Balkan War in 1912-13. These wars caused the Empire the loss of large territories. For the first time Armenian citizens of the Ottoman Empire participated in these wars as they were conscripted into the Ottoman army. Indeed, prior to the Constitution of 1908 Christians were not entitled to join the Ottoman army. The Ottoman Armenians reacted to these two wars; they had specific views regarding their causes and related issues, The author analyzes these views and stances by highlighting the declarations of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and the Social Democrat Hunchagian Party. These had a dominant presence in Western Armenian public life. The Balkan Wars reaffirmed the necessity of implementing reforms in the Ottoman Empire under international supervision. Reforms had been the demand of the Western Armenians from the time of the Berlin Conference of 1878. During these two wars the Western Armenians generally, faithfully served in the Ottoman army and contributed to efforts and acts that aimed at enhancing the army's morale and strengthening it. However, during the Balkan War Armenian views were not uniform Some Armenian volunteers fought in the Bulgarian army as a separate squad. The author notes that both these wars impacted on Turkish political mentality, which underwent a significant change, replacing Ottomanism with Turkish nationalism.
