Abstract
Hovhannes Blooze of Erzinka is a thirteenth century author and philosopher of very wide learning. Besides his numerous sermons, theological and philosophical treatises, Blooze has a brief study called “Views From the Writings of Islamic philosophers”. This rather short book is a selection of fragments from “certain” islamic philosophers whose identity he never mentions. His sources had so far remained unknown to historians of Armenian Philosophy. The main objective of the present paper is to establish the theory (by way of specific references) that the “Views...” is a selective summary of the “Epistles of the Brethren of Purity”, (Rasail Ikhuan al-Safa’), a massive encyclopaedic work of four volumes containing 52 epistles or papers. These epistles reflect the basic creed of the Brethren of Purity, who formed a secret communical and fraternal organization, a philosophico-religious society which originated in Basrah in the second half of the tenth century. The Epistles were an Encyclopaedia of sciences encompassing almost the entire field of human knowledge. Blooze owes to the Brethren much more that it could generally be expected from a summarizer-translator. In fact his later works reveal some influences. However, the extent and precise nature of his relation with this school of thought remains to be studied.
