Abstract
Hamparstum Boyadjian (aka Medzen Murad), is a prominent figure of Armenian national liberation movement. Boyadjian, a leader of the Social Democratic Hnchag Party (SDHP), was born in Hadjin in 1867 and was hanged in Cesaria in 1915. He was elected an MP for the first term of the Ottoman Parliament (1908-1912) after the proclamation of the 1908 Ottoman constitution.
The paper is about the parliamentary activities of Boyadjian, which have not previously been researched.
The author divides Boyadjian’s parliamentary activities into stages:
a) the factors leading to Murad being elected as an MP;
b) Murad’s parliamentary activities between March 31/April 13 1908, and the reactionary or counter-revolutionary act and the Adana massacres;
c) Murad’s stance on mandatory conscription of Christians;
d) Murad’s stance on social, labour and democratic demands;
e) Murad’s stance on defending Armenian interests;
f) the circumstances which stop him being an MP.
The author has extensively used the Istanbul Armenian newspapers of all affiliations of the time. This has enabled him to present a thorough picture of Murad’s parliamentary performance.
