Abstract
The study focuses on the diverse shapes of a set of bath tasses, in which clay used as soap was stored and carried to the public bath, where women used the clay to wash their hair.
Through extensive research in different museums, catalogues, and collections the author has been able to collect data on some 60 such tasses used for clay and accordingly develop his observations. The study discerns three groups of tasses used for clay and notes that one of the groups was mostly used in Eastern Armenia, while another group was mostly use in Western Armenia, Cilicia and among the Armenian communities of the Middle East up to the 1950s. The third group, however, which has several versions in shape, weight and function, was used by both the Western and Eastern Armenians for other purposes as well.
The article provides a table that reveals the height, diameter, weight, and thickness of some of the tasses described here.
