Abstract
The monastery of Tati (or Khouta), is a famous religious and cultural center located in the canton of Khatchen, in Arzdakh, one of the provinces of historic Armenia. According to a legend, the monastery was established during the first century. It was built on the grave of Tati, a Christian martyr. The monastery was destroyed during the Arab invasion. In the 12th century, however, at the time of the Seljukid invasions it was re- built and was used as a fortress. The buildings of the present complex come from the 12th-13th centuries. The monastery has also been used as the princely burial ground of the Aranshahik - Vakhtanguian princely family. The cathedral was built in 1214, by Arzou-Khatoun, the wife of prince Vakhtang. The cathedral is rectangular from outside but from within it is cruciform, with two floor vestries at the four corners. The interior of the cathedral is covered by fresco dating from the 13th century, but un- fortunately it is mostly damaged. Near the cathedral are two other buildings, the hall of columns, built in 1241, and another church (13th century). The hall of columns on the west ends with a campanile (13th-14th centuries), and to its north stands the church of Saint Tati (10th-11th centuries) with its exceptional measures. On the south of the column hall stands alone the fourth church of the monastery, built in 1182. Also on the southern part of the complex are the secular buildings which includes the palatial hall of receptions (1211), the dining room with the kitchen, the library and the living quarters (all built in 13th century). On the south western side of the monastery are the guest house and the palace of the prince (13th century). In the complex there are numerous khatchkars (stone-crosses) and valuable lithographic inscriptions.
The monuments of Tativank, which are metrographed and studied for the first time here are very important for the history of Armenian architecture.
