| dc.description.abstract | Since the publication of the Coinage of the Artaxiad of Armenia, and Armenian Coins and Their Values, numerous new coins which deserve our attention have been discovered. Nos. 1. 2. The letters engraved on the reverse of the Tigranes tetradrachms are behind Tyche's head, the letter Φ above v resembles an anchor and the letters A and M are in the right filed below the palm-branch, H. Nos. 3, 4. These small silver fractional drachms of Tigranes with quadriga design were described in the past but not properly. The reason for this was their being struck off-center. They remind us of the copper coin of Tigranes with quadriga design (letter B). Nos. 5, 6 are copper coins of Tigranes with Heracles (Vahagn) design. The Interesting feature of No. 5 is that the king's face is unshaven. On No.6 there is a countermark behind the king's head, formed of four circles, each containing a pellet. They form a diamond-shaped pattern. Also, there is an eagle in a rectangular punch; the eagle's right wing coincides with the left pellet. Nos. 7 is a copper coin of Tigranes with Tyche reverse design. The interesting feature of this coin is the countermark A behind the king's head, and the Armenian tiara has four peaks. No. 8 is a copper coin of Tigranes II, cut diametrically to make change for transactions. The fragment cleanly removed is a one-fourth segment, from behind the tiara, and extending 8mm, inside. The appearance of the patina also suggests that the fragment was removed in ancient times. No. 9 is a copper coin of Tigranes with Nike walking left. The right arm is outstretched, and the outstretched left arm holds an object resembling letter A. | |
