Abstract
In his study “Boundaries of Wisdom”, David Anhaght separates mathematical quantities into two groups: irrationals and rationales. He explains how irrational quantities may be divided geometrically (“by force”) into pieces, yet it is not possible to measure the pieces. Chapter 10 of Euclid’s “elements” is considered by the scientific world as the geometric solution of second-degree algebraic problems. But no practical applications were known. David Anhaght gives such an application. These ideas were common knowledge among the Armenian architects as if shown by observing the proportions used in the construction of Armenian churches. One can thus conclude that the Armenians were familiar with the most advanced ideas in Euclid’s “Elements” during the 5th – 6th centuries, although the book was not translated into Armenian until 1051 A.
