The architectural complex of Kandzassar has been constructed in the thirteenth century by the prince of Artzakh-Khatchen, namely Hassan Chalalian. The main building of the complex, the church of St. John the Saviour, has been built in the years 1216-1238, while the narthex has been completed in the year 1261. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Kandzassar has been one of the most important cultural centres of Armenia. New manuscripts, locally inscribed, were added to the rich library of the monastery. Here also, the fine arts of miniature flourished extensively. In 18th century, in the days of Catholicoss Yessayi Hassan Chalalian, Kandzassar turned out to be the religious and political centre of Gharabagh and Sunik. The monastery of Kantzassar is one of the exceptional monuments of Armenian architecture and sculpture. The two hundred carved inscriptions on the walls of the complex have their special significance as a source material for the history of Artzakh-Khatchen in particular, and for Armenia in general.
