dc.description.abstractThe popular stories about mermaids constitute a distinct group in the Armenian mythology of the underground and have their parallels in the beliefs of several nations of the world. Such popular stories are not high in number, though they are geographically quite widespread. The prototypes of the mermaids mentioned in written sources of the 1850s-early 1900s are found in the Bible as well as in the works of fifth century Armenian historiographers. In the Armenian tales these mermaids are amphibious; they live both in water and on land. They are identified as two different characters: a) ugly, monstrous water witches, b) fairies of virgin beauty. The basic function of the first group is to hurt humans and children and cause them vital damage. The second group of mermaids distracts, seduces and misleads men to increase the number of their kind. The tales describe the matchless beauty of the fairies and particularly singly out their blue eyes and blond hair, which are interesting and warrant significant attention from the mythological perspective.
