Caesarea was one of the most populous settlements in the Ottoman Empire. Armenians lived there from the 11th century, when a huge wave of migration caused a demographic shift in the Cappadocia region and the preponderance of the Armenians In a short time Armenian culture developed and numerous churches and monasteries were built in and around Caesarea, making the region a center for Armenian manuscripts and illumination. The Ottomans occupied the area in the 15-16th centuries. During Turkish dominion, the demographic picture changed gradually as the Turks occasionally evicted and forcibly relocated large numbers of Armenians and Greeks and replaced them with Muslims, or forcefully converted the local Christian population to Islam. This Turkification policy continued until the late 19th century and reached its peak during WWl, when the Armenians were uprooted. Eventually, Kemalism in the early 1920s gave the final blow to heterogeneous Caesarea and ethnically homogenized it. The paper highlights the role bishop Terdat Palian (1887-1910) played during his prelature in Caesarea in establishing schools, popularizing education, promoting and supporting Armenian culture and disseminating awareness of the graceful past it had had during previous centuries.
