Abstract
The rich and multifaceted output of the composer Edgar Hohannisyan (1930-1998). one of the unique and significant personalities of 20" century Armenian music, reflects the complex and conflicting reality he lived in. Hovhannisyan's unique musical thinking. fresh and all-embracing perception of the world, and firm esthetic principles are reflected in his works. His love for the arts, literature, dance and cinematography had a decisive role in the performances of his musical-theatrical, vocal-symphonic and chamber works.
The composer's rich output - comprised of almost all musical genres: opera. ballet. oratorio, cantala, symphony, concert, quintet, quartet, sonata, choir, romance, song, music for theatre and cinema - gives a full picture of his aesthetic principles. His analytical, in-depth articles touch upon issues related to music and have national, cultural, and aesthetic significance.
National culture and history, epic and emotional expressiveness characterize Hoshanmsyan's early compositions:
His ballets reveal his main aesthetical principle, which leads to creating a full foundation comprised of a literary-artistic libretto that grows into symphonic dramaturgy.
Reflections on ancient Armenian music are consistently present in Hovhannisyan's works: His multi-genre works are not only unique ideas of late 20* century neoclassicism and genre synthesis, but also an expression of the composer's unique philosophy and aesthetical perception of the world.

In different years the composer led the Opera and Ballet Theatre of Armenia, the State Sons, and Dance Ensemble, ArmConcert. the TV and Radio Chamber Choir, and the Yerevan Conservatory. Deeply understanding the demands of new aesthetics and the whole palette of the means needed for their implementation, he always complemented all his administrative positions with well-defined objectives, making the sustainability and development of national values and traditions his primary goal. The philosophical thoughts of the composer-acsthetician were addressed in his published articles and interviews.
Sincerity is reflected in the Artist's thoughts about life, art, individual providence, and other eternal issues. According to Hohannisyan, an artist is different from ordinary mortals, as he can find his mission through internal feeling, trying to find the answers to the eternal philosophic questions in the reflection of the present and the past.
