Abstract
In the 11th century, in the wake of the loss of the independence of Armenia, Armenian convents realize that they must ensure their own safety. Very soon, old and newly-built convents are surrounded wuth surveillant citadels. The convent-citadel architectural complex, however, takes its definitive form in the 17th century.
One of the most important provinves of Armenia, Sunik, has its prominent citadels. Most famous of these convent-citadels is that of Halitzor, built during the first half of the 17th century.
The castle plays a notable role in the 18th century battles for independence conducted by David Beg, which transforms it to an inaccessible citadel, as headquarters of liberated Ghapan. At present, very little is left of that castle, but even the fractional part is sufficient testimony of its special architectural value.
