Abstract
The famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) had various contacts with several Armenian arts professionals during her career. Her art had some influence on Armenian theater. Bernhardt made three artistic tours to Constantinople (in 1888, 1893, 1904), then one of the centers of Armenian theater. During the 1888 tour the Armenian poet Alexander Panosyan wrote her a poem-request in French, asking for tickets for four Armenian theater fans. The actress appreciated the poem and presented the tickets. In 1893 Bernhardt received a musical composition from the Sinanyan musical orchestra of Constantinople as a present. While on a tour in Egypt in 1900, she watched the Armenian actress Siranoush playing and highly appreciated her talent. Bernhardt appreciated also the art of the Armenian stage designer S. Shishejyan. Several Armenian actors worked in her group (A. Armenyan, M. Maxoudian). Bernhardt's Armenian spectators commented positively (writer Alexander Shirvanzade, actor Vahram Papazyan, director Rouben Mamoulian) and negatively (actor P. Adanyan, Azniv Hrachya) on her art.
Armenian actresses, particularly Siranoush, were compared with Bernhardt. As early as 1881 a number of articles were published in the Armenian press about Bernhardt; her name was mentioned in Armenian fiction too.
